Benefits of Membership of the ROA
Third Party Liability Insurance
All ROA members will receive automatic liability insurance cover against potential damages if their horse causes injury to a third party or their property.
Free racecourse admission to over 1,200 fixtures a year
Racecourse Badge Scheme for Owners provides free admission to more than 1,200 racecourse fixtures in 2008, including every fixture at 28 tracks. To qualify, members must own at least one horse in training or the equivalent in part-ownerships.
There is currently a maximum of 2,500 ROA members allowed on to the Scheme, which is run in collaboration with the Racecourse Association, but there are still places available for this year. Once accepted onto the scheme, your membership card will be automatically activated enabling you to gain entry to qualifying fixtures. This scheme runs from January to December and members must re-apply each year to continue on the scheme. Members wishing to join the Racecourse Badge Scheme for Owners must have a photograph included on their Racing Industry Privilege Card (membership card) although this is not a condition of membership to the ROA.
20% Discount on most BHA registration fees
ROA members now receive a 20 per cent discount on many BHA registration fees including:
- Individual Owner
- Joint Ownership
- Racing Partnership
- Registration and re-registration of Colours
- Registration of Names
- Reservation of a Name under rule
- Authority to Act
and many other registration charges.
To qualify, an Owner must be a member of the ROA (in the same name as their Registered Owner name) at the time the registration fees apply discounts cannot be applied retrospectively.
For horses in Joint-Ownership, the discounts will be applied to the joint-owners who are members of the ROA, pro-rata to their share in the horse.
Racing Partnerships receive the full discounts provided that 51 per cent or more of the nominated partners are members of the ROA.
Totesport Owner-Sponsorship
Totesport are sponsoring 2,000 horses owned by ROA members in 2004-2008. Having your racing silks sponsored in this way enables owners to register for, and reclaim, VAT on their costs of racehorse ownership including purchase and training expenses.
Owners can reclaim VAT on training expenses backdated up to six months from the start of joining a sponsorship scheme, while VAT can also be reclaimed on the purchase price of a horse and this be backdated up to three years.
There are a few spaces still available for the scheme which started on July 1st. Totesport Owner-Sponsorship schemes run for 12 months. To join a totesport Owner-Sponsorship scheme, please contact the ROA office in the first instance for an application form.
Thoroughbred Owner & Breeder
Members of the ROA receive a copy of the most exciting and informative monthly magazine for the racing and breeding industry. Regular features include incisive interviews with racing industry leaders, reports and analysis of the sales, big-race results with pedigree analysis, appearance and prize-money tables and much more.
Horseracing Privilege Card
Members receive a personalised membership card which allows complimentary access to the racecourse for owners with runners on the day as well as access for qualifying members at Owners' Badge Scheme fixtures, provided that the card has a photograph of the member included as this is a condition of OBS.
Free owners' car park label
The ROA/RCA car park label allows access to Owners' Car Parks for almost ev ery racing fixture. This often provides parking on a firm surface rather than on grass and usually gets you closer to the main entrance, as well as saving money! Please apply to the ROA direct if you would like a car park label. These are valid from April 1st to March 31st and you should reapply each year for a valid carpark label.
Private hospitality marquees at Cheltenham in March and November
Special member events including:

Additional concessions for Scottish members who have at least a 5% registered interest in a horse trained in Scotland.
